the vision:

in 1995 s&p won the international competition, organised as part of the overall reform of the german railways, to design the ‘reisezentren’ (travel centres). the aim was to develop a modern ‘service centre’ for the services of deutsche bahn network for an increasingly mobile society.

the modular service counters are designed as independent facility elements with integrated lighting, hvac, and have been engineered to optimize all functional, cost and assembly aspects. the system has been implementation in more than 350 locations.

frankfurt central railway station was selected to demonstrate  the overall concept of deutsche railway’ new reisezentren. from an architectural perspective, the project has restored some of the station’s historical characteristics, while installing a large, modern atrium that floods the area with natural light.

apart from deutsche bahn’s ticketing services, the centre includes dedicated counters for car rentals, conference facilities and first- and second-class lounges on the new mezzanine levels above.
